Explore Natural Dyeing with Fresh & Simple Resist Techniques
Saturday, August 1, 9a-12p, at Snapdragon Flower Farm, Spokane, WA
Join me at Snapdragon Flower Farm to explore dyeing with fresh Japanese indigo. Working with fresh indigo is a delight and is absolute alchemy! Together we’ll start with a walk in the gardens and discuss growing Japanese Indigo and answer questions about growing dye plants. While at the gardens, we’ll harvest indigo together for our dye work and begin preparing our fabrics. We’ll discuss the importance of mordanting and the value of pH and additional colors from overdyeing. You will use pre-mordanted silks and cottons for your project and learn different ways of resist-binding to create beautiful patterns that you can use in all your dye projects. Once our fabrics are ready, you’ll learn the salt extraction method with the fresh indigo leaf to extract pigment for dyeing. The best part is unveiling your work, you will be amazed!
This workshop celebrates the amazing hidden blue in Japanese Indigo and will provide resources about its important and difficult history in the US and abroad. The farm is a welcoming space for creative play, curiosity, and connection—no prior experience needed. Come as you are and leave with beautiful textiles and a deeper appreciation for the colors growing all around us. All tools and materials provided. You will leave with your unique hand dyed pieces, as well as a dye journal template and resources for your continued natural dye experiments.
Cancellation Policy: Although we do not do refunds, we can discuss substitutions for a later class. Please contact us if you are unable to attend, or let us know if you will need to send another person in your place.
